Summer Shows - see calendar for details

Here's to enjoying the long days while they are here!
Hello friends and fans,
I hope you enjoy the image to the left at the bottom of my calendar, created by my friend, Dennis Wianko, who spent time recently in the SW. If you can't tell, it's about petrogliphs, light, dark, shadows, perspective, play , cliff dwellings, mystery and love. Happy summer to you all! Get it while you can - the days only get shorter from here on out!
It's been a productive and inspiring winter and spring for me, as I've been working closer to home and touring less. I have been working alot with local heros Greg Clarke, (bluegrass old time), Terry Robb, (firewater acoustic blues), and Johnnie Ward, elder statesmen of the Portland blues and jive scene. One of the best developments is a that my musical daughter, Zoe Carpenter, has come back to the music she grew up with and now joins me for some deep harmony singing. We have that family "blend" and it's a great joy to work with her.
There are several festivals and concerts coming up in the NW, look forward to seeing many of you there; Waterfront Blues, Centrum's blues, Columbia Gorge Bluegrass, as well as more intimate area shows.

John Cephas Tribute John was one of our National Treasures and a huge influence on my music and attitude toward it. If you are not familiar with him and his music, I think you'll enjoy following the links below, as his contribution to our American musical heritage was so great. John died early May, and a significant piece of our oral culture went with him. RIP.

Mother and Daughter Duo Zoe Carpenter performing
Zoe happened to be home from college in time to join me for a Library concert of historic folk music here in Portland. She joins me when she can and it's a treat that I hope to share with more of you in the years to come.
Zoe played fiddle, piano and sang for years, coming to and taking workshops at all the festivals and music camps our family went to, continuing with lessons at home. As a teenager, she became devoted to training her horse in dressage, but recently has come back to the music. She continues with vocal training, jazz guitar and has picked up the fiddle again?!?!!!

Y'All Come on up to Centrum for a good time and some Country Blues Lightnin' Wells, North Carolina Songster
One of the country's finest workshops in Country Blues happens July 26-August 1. It is sponsored by Centrum, housed in the gorgeous Fort Warden St. Park, in Port Townsend, WA. I really love this program because elders who are purveyors of oral tradition are there, as well as more studied masters of acoustic blues who are usually terrific teachers as well as players. There is down time in this program, which has the effect of creating lots of jamming and inspired unplanned playing and good times. If you are interested in bringing your playing up a notch or two and being bathed in the sounds of acoustic blues for a week, check it out.
