FREERANGE FOLK & BLUES - from the parlor to the back porch

Hello
March is a busy month in Portland and all you fans will have the chance to catch me doing a local show designed toward what ever style of mine you like best; blues, folk, eclectic, jamming, even Irish. Plus, the first CD release show is at the end of the month.
This week you can hear me at 4 very different venues and with different programs.
I'll be jug banding it with Johnnie Ward, Tues., Mar 5, then joining Joe McMurrian at Al's Den this Thursday. I'll be contributing to Women's History month at the Belmont Library Sat., Mar 9, with a special show: From the Parlor to the Back Porch - Women in American Folk Music. Later, Sat night, Mar 9, I'll dig back to my forays into Irish music and blarney at a Hardly Strictly Irish concert at Tabor Space with Portland folk royalty, Kate Power and Steve Einhorn.
The following week is full as well.
On Thursday, Mar 14, I'll have the pleasure of opening for the fine acoustic guitarist Doug MacLeod at Duff's Garage. Then both Friday and Sat, Mar 15 and 16, I'll be in the early sets for, as Mary Flower put it, "the big music extravaganza at Vie de Boheme (Music Bridge Acoustic Blues), yet another huge gathering of local folks." Later that night, at 11 pm on Friday, I'll be jugging it up again with Johnnie and the Eagle Ridin' Papas at the Jugapalooza jug band festival . On Saturday, I have a Irish show with Dan Compton and Fran Slefer, the early set at Vie De Boheme, then an acoustic blues set with Terry Robb at the Mudday Rudder at 8 pm.
I'll have a week off from performances before the first of 2 local CD release concerts.
On Sunday, Mar. 24, at 2pm, I'll celebrate the release of The Light Still Burns, the companion CD to the new history book, Kalamazoo Gals: A Story of Extraordinary Women and Gibson WWII Banner Guitars, by John Thomas. The book and the record celebrate the women's work force and the fabulous guitars they made during WWII and ties into my Women's History program. I am very excited to that the show is FREE and at the gorgeous main library, downtown. I can't think of a more apt venue, especially architecturally, for this historically themed show. I will have my new 1943 Banner guitar for the show.
The 2nd CD release concert will be at Artichoke Music, Sat April 13. Make reservations through me at lauren@laurensheehanmusic.com. It's a small room, so don't get left out if you want to be there.
See the calendar for details and read more below if you are one of the fans who love my chatty news letters!
I hope to see many of you this month.

The Light Still Burns
companion CD to the history book Kalamazoo Gals: A Story of Extraordinary Women and Gibson WWII Banner Guitars, by John Thomas.
Purchase book here http://www.kalamazoogals.com/

While the men were off to the war, women filled in and kept the lights burnin' at Gibson's. The guitars of this period have a banner across the headstock, hence "Banner Guitars" and are oft considered among the treasures of Gibson guitars. Who were the women, what was their story, why did Gibson cover up the fact that they made these guitars, why are the guitars so wonderful sounding and how were they made? These questions and more about the story are the subject of the book.
But then John thought about how cool it would be if folks could also hear the guitars the women made. He raised some funds, got guitars donated from all over the country for a recording project and then found a women to play them - me. Many songs seemed to suggest themselves to me after I read the manuscript so picking the music was easy and it's mostly appropriate to the times and themes in the book. We used a different guitar for each track. Eric Tate engineered it, in New Haven, CT, at Firehouse 12 Studio, so that you , the listeners, would be able to hear and appreciate the sonic details and differences of the guitars.
It was an extraordinary experience to be in the studio surrounded by vintage banner guitars and to be able to take my pick of them. We made sure that we represented all the model types we had, so there is good variety.
Stay tuned for the release and to order your copy. You can listen to an NPR story about the project or read an article from the New Haven Register with the links below.
