Hello friends and music lovers,
I am so excited to be able to play a little live music again and have a couple of local shows coming up, including a genuine, bona fide concert in a listening room out at the Oregon coast, the Bay City Arts Center. I hear the room is exquisite for music and I am beyond excited to have the chance to fill the room with live sound, cool music and good people. The concert is in honor of Black History Month, so I'll be playing lots of country blues, telling stories about the music and folks who played it or taught it to me.
Here is a little musical news to catch us up since it's been a while now. I am looking to start playing out again more and hope it will be possible. I have been home a lot these past 2 years and a lot of my musical acts fell away due to the virus and related circumstances. So I'm doing a lot of solo material at this point. I did a few live streams - thanks for tuning in if you did - raised a little money for NAACP, discovered that I have terrible uploading speed in my country abode, taught a few students and workshops over zoom, kept playing for my own pleasure and sanity and I finally got that national guitar that I drooled over for almost 4 years. It's sweet.
I found a few very local gigs and have been playing about once a month, mostly out of doors and I feel indebted to the folks who have been willing to go the extra mile to let me be outside, stay warm, accept the compromises and to do all we could to not make each other ill while enjoying being in culture together. Thank you venue owners and fans.
We took advantage of warmer months and had a few very careful small music camp outs. I thank my dear friends who helped calculate how we could see each other with lowest risk, savoring all that friendship, music and laughter brings. And to those even fewer dear friends and beloved musical buddies who met up with me in the cold, wet months, bundled in down and wool like Star Wars characters, hanging clear shower curtains and singing 8-10 feet apart around outdoor campfires and under electric heaters - here's to us, we made it!
The last bit of news is that I started working part time for Pacific University teaching guitar classes and private students, many in the music therapy program. It's full circle for me to be coming back to education again. I find it a delight to be in a learning community and the chaos of a music building, and appreciate the bit of structure and challenge it adds to my life. My teaching chops are pretty good these days - reach out if you'd like an outdoor or zoom lesson.
Here are the upcoming show details. See you soon I hope.
